The Lord is my Light
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1
After creating heaven and earth, God made light. Light affects us in amazing ways. The warmth and light of the sun can change our whole attitude on a dreary day. We love gazing at stars, the tiny lights in the darkness, and they inspire us to dream. Light makes us feel safe in an otherwise dark world.
Before salvation we are in spiritual darkness. Jesus draws us out of the darkness into the light. When the light exposes the darkness, we see what’s really there, like walking into a room we’ve never been in before. In darkness we bump into things, but even a small flicker of light exposes what is in the room, and the brighter the light, the more we see.
I recently learned that kittens need light to grow. I knew that plants needed light to grow but I didn’t realize that if newborn kittens are left in the dark they will not physically grow. Perhaps it is the same for other animals. I know that we cannot grow spiritually without the light of Jesus.
Growth is a process we go through our entire lives and it comes about as a result of how we handle our life experiences, both good and bad. Addiction will keep us in darkness where we cannot grow because we turn to the addiction rather than the light of Jesus when faced with difficult circumstances. Something as acceptable as television can be a dark place to hide if that’s where we go when life is tough and we need an escape. The light of Jesus will reveal the truth we cannot see, guide us on the right path, brings comfort and peace to any situation. But we must turn to Him and away from the darkness that seems like a safer place to hide. None of us can avoid life’s difficulties and heartaches. Only light will bring us maturity and wisdom and the strength to endure.
The light of Jesus exposes the sin within each of us. In His grace and mercy, God does not show us everything at once. Some things we will see right away, when our eyes are opened by the light of salvation. Others will be exposed one at a time. The closer we get to Jesus, the closer we are to the light, and the more our sins and weaknesses are revealed to us. But thank God, He does not show us to cause us shame. He reveals our imperfections to us so that He can work in us, to change us, to grow us.
Jesus’ way is always gentle and patient. Allow Him to do His work and don’t hide from the light. The light is there to make us feel safe and secure, to make our path clear, and to bring truth. The more we let Jesus’ light shine on us, the more light we have to shine on others and draw them to Jesus. Let your life be a reflection of who He is so that others will be attracted to the light.
